Media Vietnam, 24.com.vn, membuat pemberitaan yang menyudutkan Marinus Wanewar pada Minggu pagi (24/2/2019) atau beberapa jam sebelum laga melawan Timnas Indonesia U-22. Berita tersebut menggunakan judul "Penyerang lawan Vietnam di Piala AFF terlalu tua untuk usianya".
Dalam bagian dalam beritanya, media tersebut juga menuliskan kalimat "Dengan latar belakang usia 21 tahun, Marinus Wanewar diduga melakukan pencurian umur melihat wajahnya yang tua".
Indra Sjafri tak ingin menganggap tudingan tersebut sebagai sebuah masalah dan hanya ingin fokus pada laga final Piala AFF U-22 2019.
"Mereka tahu dari apa? Semua pemain yang bermain di turnamen ini pasti ada aturannya, dari paspor dan sebagainya. Saya pikir itu hanya bunga-bunga pemberitaan karena mereka kemarin kalah," kata Indra Sjafri kepada wartawan seusai latihan di Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh, Senin (25/2/2019).
"Biarkan saja itu menjadi PR mereka, tidak perlu saya pikirkan. Kemarin Marinus tidak mau salaman jadi masalah. Lalu sekarang Marinus dituding mencuri umur. Mengapa kok Marinus terus?" ucap Indra.
Di sisi lain, Marinus Wanewar baru merayakan hari ulang tahun ke-22 pada Minggu (24/2/2019). Saat ini, pemain asal Papua itu menjadi pemuncak klasemen sementara torehan gol di Piala AFF U-22 2019 dengan jumlah tiga atau sejajar penyerang Vietnam, Tran Dahn Trung.
